Which room gets the most morning sun?

If you need to place the bedroom, the dining table or the home office correctly, it's not enough to know the home "faces well". You need to know which room actually gets sun early, and which one only brightens up late in the day — and that depends on compass direction, not gut feeling.

Short answer: The room that faces most towards east gets the sun first. A room whose window or facade points roughly east — not necessarily exactly at the compass bearing 90°, but within a broad range around it — catches the morning sun, while a west-facing room only gets sunlit late in the afternoon. To know this with certainty for your own home, you need to know the home's north direction and the rooms' actual orientation — a guess based on "the sun rises in the east" rarely holds up, because a room rarely faces a compass point squarely.

Why "morning sun" isn't the same as "east-facing"

The sun doesn't rise exactly in the east — it only does that on two days a year, at the spring and autumn equinox. The rest of the year it rises somewhat towards the north-east in summer and towards the south-east in winter. A room that faces due east therefore gets morning sun all year round, while a room facing north-east gets the most morning sun in summer and less in winter, when sunrise has shifted further south.

That's why a single glance at a compass on a floor plan isn't enough. You need to know which season the question applies to if the answer is to be precise.

Why a guess rarely holds up

Most homes don't have rooms that point straight at one compass point. A room can be angled 20–30° off due east and therefore behave like a blend — a bit of morning sun, a bit of mid-morning sun, depending on the season. Without knowing the actual angle, it's easy to guess wrong, especially in houses where the plot doesn't sit square to north, which is common in older neighbourhoods and on irregular plots.

The neighbour's house, trees and other buildings also play a part. A room that in theory faces the sun correctly can still sit in shade for most of the morning if a tall building or a tree stands right in the way. Neither a floor plan nor a simple compass check can capture that — it takes looking at the actual surrounding terrain.

Can the app show where there's the most road noise?

That's a related but different question from sunlight, and it's answered with different signals: the distance from the room to a busy road, and how much glass area the room has facing that direction. A room with a large window close to a busy road will typically experience more noise than a room further away with a small window in the same direction — but that's a relative judgement, not a measured decibel figure. No app can produce an actual noise measurement without a microphone on site; what's possible is comparing the home's own rooms against each other by distance and glass area, and pointing to which one is likely to be quietest.

How do you find the most private bedroom?

Overlook is about how easily a room can be seen from its surroundings — a neighbour's windows, a footpath, a road with foot traffic. A room with windows facing directly onto a spot where a lot of people pass close by has more overlook than a room facing into an enclosed garden or away from traffic. Again, it's a comparison between the home's own rooms, not an absolute measurement — that kind of judgement requires knowing the position of the surrounding buildings and roads, taken from a map, not from a scan of the home itself.

What none of the three signals can guarantee

Sunlight, noise and overlook, judged from direction, distance and glass area, are indicators — not guarantees. A room can in theory point correctly towards the sun and still sit in the shade of a building that isn't part of the calculation. A room can be far from any registered road and still pick up noise from a source no map data knows about — a neighbour's heat pump, a playground, a building site that opens next year. Use judgements like these to narrow the choice between rooms, not as the final word. Stand in the room at different times of day if the decision matters enough.

A practical approach if you need to allocate the rooms

  1. Find north on the home's drawing or with a compass on site.
  2. Note each room's main direction — which way the largest window faces.
  3. Compare the rooms against each other, not against an ideal. The home's most easterly room is the best bet for morning sun in that particular house, whether or not it faces due east squarely.
  4. Stand in the room at the time the decision is about. If the bedroom needs to work for morning light, check it at 7am, not 2pm.
  5. Account for shade from neighbours and trees — they aren't part of a simple direction assessment.

The final decision should always take what you experience in the room yourself more seriously than a calculation. The calculation tells you where to start looking — not what to decide.
