How do I calculate the area of a room with a sloped ceiling?

A room with a knee wall has several different areas — the floor you can walk on, the floor that is tall enough to count as living space, and the surface you have to paint. Here they are all worked out on the same room.

Short answer: A room with a sloped ceiling has three areas, and all three are correct. The floor area is the whole floor, wall to wall — the figure you buy flooring by. The usable area is only the part of the floor with enough height to stand or put furniture in; where the line falls depends on what the figure is for. The wall area is measured along the sloped surface itself and is therefore larger than the floor it hangs over. Mix the three together, and you end up with too little paint and too much confusion.

Why a room with a sloped ceiling has three areas

In a room with vertical walls, the floor is the floor, and there is one area. In a room with a sloped ceiling — an attic room, a loft conversion, a bedroom with a knee wall — the ceiling drops down towards the sides, and then three different questions start giving three different answers:

The room we are calculating

Take a first-floor room in a house with a pitched roof. The floor measures 4.00 m × 5.00 m internally. On both sides, a knee wall rises 1.10 m up from the floor, and from there the sloped ceiling climbs to the ridge in the middle, which sits 2.60 m above the floor.

That gives the slope: the ceiling rises 2.60 − 1.10 = 1.50 m over the 2.00 m from the knee wall to the middle. In other words, 0.75 m up for every metre in. That figure is the key to everything that follows.

1. The floor area: 20.00 m²

4.00 × 5.00 = 20.00 m². That is how much flooring needs to be laid, and how much underfloor heating can go in. The sloped ceiling changes nothing here — the floor is exactly as large as it would be with a flat ceiling.

2. Where the ceiling reaches a chosen height

Pick the height you want to work to — here, 1.50 m. At the knee wall, the height is 1.10 m. There is 0.40 m left to reach 1.50 m, and the ceiling climbs 0.75 m per metre:

0.40 ÷ 0.75 = 0.53 m in from the knee wall.

So there is a strip of 0.53 m along each side with less than 1.5 m of clearance to the ceiling: 2 × 0.53 × 5.00 = 5.33 m². Floor with at least 1.5 m headroom: 20.00 − 5.33 = 14.67 m².

3. The area that counts as living space

When a home's floor area is officially recorded, floor under a low sloped ceiling typically does not count in full — you cannot use it as a living space. Where the cut-off line falls, and whether an extra band is added on top of it, is set by the authorities where the home is located; it is not something you can read off the room, and it is not the same from country to country.

The calculation itself, however, is the same everywhere: find the line where the ceiling reaches the cut-off height, and count the floor inside it. With the cut-off set at 1.50 m in the example, that gives 14.67 m² of the 20.00 m² of floor.

The height of the knee wall moves the figure a great deal. Had the knee wall been only 0.60 m tall instead of 1.10 m, the 1.5-metre line would fall 1.20 m in, and the countable area would drop to 8.00 m² — the same floor, almost half the countable area.

To find out exactly how your own attic room is recorded, look the home up in the public building register where you live. It is the authorities who determine the figure, and it can depend on when and how the floor was approved for habitation.

4. Where you can stand upright: 9.33 m²

The figure that decides how the room actually feels is in no register at all. Set the line at 1.90 m ceiling height. There is 0.80 m left to climb from the knee wall's 1.10 m, and 0.80 ÷ 0.75 = 1.07 m in from each side.

So you can stand upright in a strip of 4.00 − (2 × 1.07) = 1.87 m down the middle. That is 1.87 × 5.00 = 9.33 m² — less than half of the 20 m² of floor. Worth working out before you buy an attic room advertised as "20 square metres".

The wall area: the sloped surface is longer than you think

If the room needs painting, it is not the floor area you should use. The sloped surface runs 2.00 m in and 1.50 m up, and its length is the hypotenuse of that triangle:

√(2.00² + 1.50²) = √(4.00 + 2.25) = √6.25 = 2.50 m

Each sloped surface is therefore 2.50 × 5.00 = 12.50 m², and the two together 25.00 m². Notice the difference: the two sloped surfaces hang over 4.00 m of floor width, but the surface itself measures 5.00 m across, because it lies at an angle. Calculate from the floor, and you buy 25 % too little paint.

The rest of the surfaces in the room:

Note the gable. A gable wall under a pitched roof is not a rectangle but a pentagon, and the triangle at the top must be halved. Forget the halving — or treat the gable as a rectangle up to ridge height — and it comes out at 10.40 m² instead of 7.40 m², roughly 3 m² too much per gable.

How to measure a sloped ceiling yourself

You need three measurements, and all of them can be taken with an ordinary tape measure from the floor:

With those three figures you can calculate everything above. The slope is (ridge height − knee wall height) ÷ horizontal distance, and every other figure falls out of that. If you cannot reach all the way up to the ridge, measure the height at two points with a known horizontal distance between them instead — 1.00 m, say — and read the rise straight off as the difference.
