Will the wardrobe fit under the sloped ceiling in the loft?
Headroom under a sloped ceiling grows with the distance from the knee wall: a 200 cm wardrobe needs 110 cm of clearance at a 45° roof pitch — but a full 191 cm at 30°.
Short answer: under a sloped ceiling, the clear height is the knee wall's height plus the distance from the knee wall multiplied by the tangent of the roof pitch. A 200 cm tall wardrobe against a 90 cm knee wall must therefore stand 110 cm from the knee wall at a 45° pitch, 131 cm at 40°, and a full 191 cm at 30°. Always measure at the wardrobe's rear top edge — that's the one that hits the sloped ceiling first.
The formula: height grows with distance
A loft room with sloped ceilings doesn't have one height — it has a height that climbs the further in towards the ridge you go. The maths is simple and exact:
Clear height = knee wall height + (distance from knee wall × tangent of the roof pitch)
The knee wall is the low vertical wall where the slope begins — typically 90-130 cm high. The roof pitch is the angle the roof surface makes with the horizontal.
Turn the formula around, and you get what you actually need: how far into the room does the piece of furniture have to stand?
Distance from knee wall = (furniture height − knee wall height) ÷ tangent of the roof pitch
The numbers — a 200 cm wardrobe against a 90 cm knee wall
Here is the required distance from the knee wall to the back of the wardrobe, for a 200 cm tall wardrobe and a 90 cm knee wall:
- Roof pitch 25° (tangent 0.47): 236 cm from the knee wall.
- Roof pitch 30° (tangent 0.58): 191 cm.
- Roof pitch 35° (tangent 0.70): 157 cm.
- Roof pitch 40° (tangent 0.84): 131 cm.
- Roof pitch 45° (tangent 1.00): 110 cm.
- Roof pitch 50° (tangent 1.19): 92 cm.
Notice how hard this bites. At 45° a tall wardrobe costs 110 cm of floor; at 30° it costs 191 cm. In a loft room 4 metres wide with sloped ceilings on both sides, a 30° pitch leaves no room at all for a tall wardrobe against either side — the two required clearances add up to 382 cm.
The furnishing conclusion: under shallow roof pitches, tall furniture belongs against the gable (the vertical end wall), not along the sloped ceiling. Along the sloped ceiling, low furniture belongs: chests of drawers at 80-90 cm, beds, drawer units and shelving built to follow the slope.
Measure at the furniture's rear top edge
The mistake people make is measuring the room's clear height at one spot and comparing it with the furniture's height. That's the wrong comparison. A wardrobe has four top edges, and it's the rear one — the one facing the knee wall — that hits the sloped ceiling first.
How to measure correctly:
- Mark on the floor where the back of the wardrobe will stand.
- Measure the clear height straight up from exactly that line to the sloped ceiling.
- Compare with the wardrobe's full height plus 3-5 cm, so it can be tilted into place.
The 3-5 cm isn't decoration: a wardrobe typically has to be raised up from lying flat inside the room, and under a sloped ceiling there is often no room to raise it. A wardrobe delivered assembled has to be stood up on the spot; one assembled on site can be built up standing. Ask the supplier which applies.
The bed under the sloped ceiling: measure at the headboard
A bed under a sloped ceiling is the classic loft layout, and here it isn't the wardrobe but the head that needs the room. The rule:
- You must be able to sit up in bed. Measure the clear height 60-70 cm in from the knee wall, at the head of the bed, and make sure there is at least 90-100 cm above the top of the mattress at that point. A mattress with its top 50 cm above the floor therefore needs a clear height of 140-150 cm at that spot.
- You must be able to get out of bed. Measure the clear height along the side you stand up on. Below 180-190 cm, you'll duck every morning.
- The bed can be pushed in under the sloped ceiling foot-first, where no headroom is needed. That's the best use of a loft room: the foot end in the low part, the head end in the high part.
Example: knee wall 100 cm, roof pitch 40° (tangent 0.84). The top of the mattress sits 50 cm above the floor, and you want 95 cm above the mattress at the headboard — so 145 cm of clear height. The distance from the knee wall becomes (145 − 100) ÷ 0.84 = 54 cm. The headboard therefore has to stand 54 cm into the room — leaving 54 cm behind the bed that can be used for low drawers or a shelf.
How to find the roof pitch without climbing onto the roof
You don't need to measure the roof itself. Measure two numbers inside the room with a folding rule against the sloped ceiling:
- Mark a horizontal distance out from the knee wall — say exactly 100 cm into the room.
- Measure the clear height at both spots: at the knee wall (that's the knee wall's height) and 100 cm in.
- The difference in cm divided by 100 is the tangent of the roof pitch.
Example: at the knee wall there is 95 cm. A metre in there is 179 cm. The difference is 84 cm over 100 cm, so a tangent of 0.84 — roughly a 40° pitch. Now you can use the formula on any piece of furniture.
Be aware that plasterboard ceilings and added insulation make the sloped ceiling thicker than the roof itself. It's the inside surface you need to measure — not the roof's actual pitch. If the room has a dormer or an extension, the pitch changes locally — so measure where the furniture will actually stand.
Four things that ruin an otherwise correct calculation
- Rafters and collar ties. A collar tie — the horizontal beam between two rafters — often sits at 190-220 cm and cuts straight across the room. It won't be on the drawing, and it stops anything tall.
- The skirting board against the knee wall. 1-2 cm, which pushes the wardrobe just as much further into the room — where, in return, there's a little more height. Rarely decisive, but note it.
- Uneven floors. Loft floors are often not flat. Measure the height at both ends of where the wardrobe will stand.
- The wardrobe's doors and drawers. A door 50 cm wide swings 50 cm out into the room, and that's exactly where you're standing under the sloped ceiling. Sliding doors or drawers are often the smarter choice in a loft.
A loft room in a measured drawing
Sloped ceilings are the geometry where area figures are most misleading: a loft room with 20 m² of floor can have very little usable space if the roof pitch is shallow. That's why the registered floor area doesn't tell you whether the wardrobe will fit: official areas are measured from the outside and say nothing about how much headroom there is where.
