How do you measure a room alone — with no one to hold the other end of the tape?
Use the tape's hook against a corner or the skirting board, measure from a point inside the room out to both ends, split long walls into stages with a fixed midpoint — or use a laser distance meter, which never needs a second person.
Short answer: you can absolutely measure a room alone. Four techniques handle it: 1) hook the tape's end catch over the edge of the skirting board, or press the tape into the corner and lock it. 2) If the wall is longer than the tape stays rigid over (typically 2-3 m with a 25 mm tape), measure in two stages with a pencil mark on the floor as the midpoint. 3) Diagonals are measured by laying the tape on the floor and walking along it, instead of holding it up in the air. 4) A laser distance meter removes the problem entirely, because it measures from one point to the opposite surface with no far end to hold. An iPhone with LiDAR does the same for a whole room at once.
The problem isn't the length — it's the loose end
Measuring a room alone goes wrong for one reason: the tape's free end has no one to hold it. The tape slips out of the corner, sags into a bow in the middle of the room, or lies at an angle, and the reading comes out too large. If the tape sags a hand's width in the middle of a four-metre run, you'll read almost a centimetre too much — and the error always goes the same way, so it stacks up wall to wall.
Every technique below deals with the same thing: giving the loose end something to rest against, or getting rid of it altogether.
Technique 1: let the corner hold the hook
The hook at the end of a tape measure is deliberately loose — it can slide back and forth by exactly its own thickness, so the tape reads correctly both outside (the hook pulls) and inside (the hook pushes). That means you can press the hook into a corner and get the correct internal measurement, as long as you hold the tape firmly at the base.
Three ways to anchor the end alone:
- Hook it over the top edge of the skirting board. Skirting typically projects 1-2 cm from the wall, and the hook has a notch that catches. Remember to subtract the skirting's thickness afterwards if you want the wall measurement rather than the skirting measurement.
- Press the tape into the corner and lock it. Most tapes have a lock that holds the blade extended. Press the last 10 cm into the corner, lock it, and walk to the other end — the tape stays put.
- Weight the end down. A hammer, a shoe or a stack of books on the tape's last centimetre in the corner holds it in place while you walk.
Technique 2: measure long walls in two stages
An ordinary 25 mm steel tape stays rigid over roughly 2-3 metres when held horizontally in the air. Beyond that it buckles. Instead of fighting it, split the measurement:
- Measure 200 cm from the corner and make a pencil mark on the floor or the skirting.
- Measure from the mark to the opposite corner.
- Add the two figures together.
Example: 200 cm + 218 cm = 418 cm. Check it by taking the measurement in one go with the tape lying on the floor — it should come out at 418 ± 1 cm. If it doesn't, you've lost or gained a mark, and you'll spot it immediately.
The mistake to avoid: measuring 200 cm and forgetting that the next reading has to start at the mark, not at the tape's zero laid down at some arbitrary spot. Always put the mark on the floor with a pencil, never in the air with a finger.
Technique 3: lay the tape down when measuring diagonals
The diagonal from corner to corner is the measurement that reveals whether a room is square — and it's also the hardest one to take alone, because neither end has a wall to rest against in the middle.
The fix is to stop holding the tape at all. Lay it on the floor, pull it out from one corner across the room, and walk along the tape to the other corner. The floor keeps the tape straight, you read the figure where it meets the corner, and the bow is gone.
If furniture is in the way, measure the diagonal to a fixed point along the way instead — the edge of a door frame, for example — and continue from there. Two short measurements added together beat one long one sagging in a bow around a sofa.
Technique 4: measure from a point inside the room and add up
In a room where you can't reach one corner, you can measure the wall in halves. Find a spot you can reach, measure from it to both ends, and add them together. It always works, and it's more reliable than stretching.
The same principle makes ceiling height easy to do alone: hold the tape vertically up towards the ceiling with one hand, and read it off where it braces against the floor by itself — a stiff 25 mm tape can easily stand 250 cm vertical without buckling, once one end is braced on the floor. Or measure up to the top of the door frame, which you can reach, and then from the top of the frame to the ceiling with the tape in your hand. Two small measurements added together.
Laser distance meter: the problem disappears
A laser distance meter measures by sending a beam of light at the opposite surface and timing the return. There's no loose end, no bow and no second person. You place the device against one wall, aim it at the opposite one, and read the figure.
Three things to watch for when measuring alone with a laser:
- The reference point. The device measures either from its back edge, its front edge, or a flip-out foot. Pick the wrong one and every reading is offset by the device's length, typically 5-11 cm. Check the setting once, and leave it.
- The aim has to be perpendicular. Aim it at an angle and you measure a diagonal, getting too large a figure. Lay the device flat against the wall or the floor so it can't point crooked.
- The surface has to bounce light back. A window, a mirror or a glossy black surface sends the beam onward instead of back. Prop a piece of card or a book up as a target on that surface.
When the phone measures the whole room at once
An iPhone with LiDAR — the Pro models from iPhone 12 Pro onward, plus iPad Pro with LiDAR — doesn't measure one dimension at a time; it measures every surface in the room as you walk around. That solves the one-person problem completely, because there's no end to hold. You walk calmly along the walls, and the geometry is captured as you go.

The tape measure is still worth carrying. The best one-person method is a scan plus three or four spot checks taken with a tape: one wall's full length, a diagonal and the ceiling height. If they match, you can trust the rest.
Five mistakes people make measuring alone
- Measuring at 1 metre height and catching radiators, curtains and window sills instead of the wall. Measure along the floor at around 10 cm.
- Forgetting the skirting isn't the wall. Two 15 mm skirting boards leave the room's width 3 cm short.
- Reading the tape at an angle. Look straight down at the figure, not from the side — parallax easily costs half a centimetre per reading.
- Writing it down only once the room is finished. Write each figure down straight away, directly on the sketch. Four measurements held in your head become three when the phone rings.
- Skipping the diagonal, because it's awkward alone. It's exactly the one that reveals whether the rest adds up.
