Can an iPhone make a 3D model of my whole house?
Yes, if the phone has a LiDAR sensor and you scan the rooms one at a time. The model is built up from the individual scans, stacked floor by floor — but it is only ever as complete as your scans are.
Short answer: yes. An iPhone with LiDAR (the Pro models from the 12 Pro onwards, plus the iPad Pro with LiDAR) can scan room by room and join them into a single model of the whole home, with every floor stacked on top of each other. The model is not a photo of the house — it is built from the walls, doors and windows the app has recognised along the way, so it is lighter, cleaner, and can show things a scan on its own cannot, such as shadows and daylight.
What "3D model of the whole house" actually means
There is an important difference between a scan and a model. When you scan a room, the phone collects millions of measured points and works out, as it goes, where the walls, doors and windows are. The raw result is large and messy — it is not what you see afterwards. A good app processes the scan into clean building elements: a wall with a thickness, a window with a position. It is that processed version that becomes the 3D model.
"Whole house" means the rooms from several scans — and often several floors — are joined into one model, instead of you looking at one room at a time. That requires the app to know how the rooms relate: which wall two rooms share, and how high one level starts relative to another.
What does the phone need?
The LiDAR sensor is not optional here — it is what lets the phone measure distances directly instead of guessing them from the camera. Without LiDAR, an app can still help you draw a floor plan by hand from measurements you take yourself, but it cannot scan the room on its own. So check whether your phone or iPad actually has LiDAR before you expect to be able to scan — not every model does, not even every "Pro" model across the years.
How do you see every floor at once?
That requires the app to know which floor each room belongs to, and how high each floor sits relative to the others. That is not something a single scan can work out on its own — the ground floor and first floor are scanned separately, often on different days, and the app has to stack them correctly, so the staircase on the first floor genuinely lands above the staircase on the ground floor, rather than floating at some random height in the air.
Done correctly, the model lets you:
- See the whole house from the outside, as a volume with every floor stacked, and rotate around it.
- Toggle floors on and off to view a single storey in isolation, or cut through the house and look down into it.
- Toggle layers on and off — ceilings, furniture, shadows — to strip the view back if you only want to see the room layout itself.
Without that floor-by-floor joining, what you get instead is a collection of separate rooms floating free — not a house you can walk around.
Is the 3D model to scale?
Yes, if it is built from scan data rather than just a photo-based 3D capture. Because the model consists of recognised building elements with real measurements — a wall that is 4.12 m, a ceiling height of 2.45 m — you can measure on it the same way you can measure on the floor plan itself. That is a different kind of 3D from a plain surface scan, where the model only resembles the house without "knowing" anything about the measurements underneath. One thing to bear in mind: the model's accuracy is never better than the scan's. If a room was scanned poorly — too fast, with reflective surfaces, or with furniture in the way — the 3D model inherits the same inaccuracy. A good-looking model is not automatically proof of an accurate measurement.
What the ceiling and hidden surfaces are NOT
Most measuring apps do not scan the ceiling directly — the phone is typically held at chest height and rarely looks straight up. The ceiling height in the model is therefore usually derived from the walls that WERE scanned, not from the ceiling surface itself. That is perfectly fine for giving the model a ceiling to close the room off with, but it is not the same as a measured ceiling structure with beams, sloped sections or bulkheads. If you have a room with uneven walls or a dormer, check the ceiling height with a physical tape measure if it needs to be relied on for anything important.
What the model can do that an ordinary scan cannot
- Toggle elements on and off. Remove the furniture to see the room shape cleanly, or remove the ceiling to look down into the house from above.
- Show light and shadows, if the app knows the house's location and orientation to north — the sun can then be calculated correctly instead of being a fixed light source.
- Be exported to other formats — 3D files that other programs can open, or a drawing in DXF if you need the measurements in another piece of software.
A plain surface scan cannot do the same, because it does not know what something is — only what it looks like.
What if only some rooms are scanned?
The model only shows what it has data for. If half the house is scanned and the rest is not, you get a model of the scanned half — not a guess at the rest. That is the correct behaviour: an app that invented geometry for a room it had never seen would hand you an attractive picture of something that might not match reality. If a room is missing from the model, the reason is usually simple — it has not been scanned yet, or the scan failed partway through and needs to be redone. Some apps also let you fill in the missing rooms with a manual drawing based on your own measurements, so the whole house can still stand as one, even the parts that were never scanned with LiDAR.
