How high should a pendant light hang — and what does ceiling height have to do with it?
Over a dining table a pendant typically hangs 60-70 cm above the tabletop, whatever the ceiling height. Ceiling height doesn't decide the hanging height — it decides the length of the cord.
Short answer: a pendant over a dining table typically hangs with its underside 60-70 cm above the tabletop — that figure does not change when the ceiling is high. Ceiling height only decides how long the cord needs to be. The maths: cord length = ceiling height − table height − hanging height − the lamp's own height. With 2.60 m to the ceiling, a table at 0.75 m, 65 cm of clearance and a 0.25 m tall lamp, the cord needs to be 2.60 − 0.75 − 0.65 − 0.25 = 0.95 m. Where people walk under the lamp, though, there should be at least 2.10 m of clear height.
The rule: measure from what the lamp lights — not from the ceiling
The most common lighting mistake is measuring down from the ceiling. The eye doesn't read a lamp's distance to the ceiling; it reads its distance to the table, the kitchen island or the floor below. That's why hanging height is always set from the surface underneath the lamp.
The heights that work in an ordinary home:
- Over a dining table: underside 60-70 cm above the tabletop. Higher, and the light spreads too thin; lower, and you can't see across the table.
- Over a kitchen island you stand at: 70-80 cm above the worktop, so the lamp isn't at eye level for whoever is standing there chopping.
- Over a coffee table: 70-90 cm, but there's usually more leeway here, since no one sits directly underneath.
- Where people walk under it: at least 2.10 m of clear height to the lamp's underside — in an entryway, a hallway, beside a dining table, and anywhere a tall person might pass through.
- Ceiling fans: always follow the manufacturer's clearance requirement below the blades. That's a safety margin, not a matter of taste.
The maths for cord length
Cord length is the only thing ceiling height changes. The formula:
Cord length = ceiling height − table height − desired clearance − the lamp's own height
Three examples with a dining table at the standard 0.75 m, 65 cm of clearance, and a 0.25 m lampshade:
- 2.40 m to the ceiling: 2.40 − 0.75 − 0.65 − 0.25 = 0.75 m of cord
- 2.60 m to the ceiling: 2.60 − 0.75 − 0.65 − 0.25 = 0.95 m of cord
- 3.20 m to the ceiling: 3.20 − 0.75 − 0.65 − 0.25 = 1.55 m of cord
Notice that the lamp hangs at exactly the same height above the table in all three cases. Only the cord gets longer — which is why you should check how much cord a lamp ships with before you buy it, if your ceilings are tall. Many pendants come with a cord that just barely reaches in a room with 2.40-2.50 m of ceiling height.
A high ceiling calls for a bigger lamp, or more of them
A tall room has more volume to fill with light, and a single small pendant in the middle of it disappears up there. Two things follow from that:
- The lamp is allowed to be bigger. A pendant that looks large in the shop looks right in a room with 3 m of ceiling height, and undersized if it was chosen for 2.40 m.
- The light needs to come in from several levels. A tall room quickly becomes a dark box with a single light source in the middle. Floor lamps, table lamps and light thrown up towards the ceiling do more for how the room feels than a brighter bulb in the pendant.
The reverse holds in a low room: light aimed up at the ceiling makes the room look taller, because the ceiling turns bright instead of sitting there as a shadow. An uplighter in a corner is one of the cheapest fixes for a room that feels cramped.
Where the lamp should sit horizontally
Hanging height is only half the job. The lamp also needs to sit above the centre of the table, not the centre of the room — and the two are rarely the same spot.
If the outlet is in the wrong place, there are three fixes: move the outlet (electrician), hang the lamp from a hook and run the cord at an angle (cheapest, but the cord is visible), or move the table. Measure it out before you decide: a floor plan with the table's actual position settles the question in a minute.
With several pendants over a long table, space them evenly: for three lamps over a 2.00 m table, that's 2.00 ÷ 3 = 0.67 m between each, measured centre to centre, with the middle one over the centre of the table. Keep at least 30-40 cm from the ends of the table to the outermost lamp, so the ends don't go dark.
Measure the ceiling height before you order the lamp
All the maths above assumes you know the ceiling height at the exact spot the lamp will hang — not an average for the room. Measure vertically from the finished floor up to the ceiling, precisely where the outlet sits. In older houses ceilings are rarely level, and a couple of centimetres' difference between the middle and the corner is common.
If the outlet sits in a recess, under a beam or inside a duct box, measure to that surface — not to the ceiling next to it. A 20 cm beam makes the cord 20 cm shorter.

The checklist before you hang the lamp
- Ceiling height at the outlet, measured vertically from the finished floor — not the room's average.
- Table height under the lamp. Dining table typically 0.75 m, kitchen island often 0.90-0.95 m, coffee table 0.40-0.50 m.
- The lamp's own height and the length of cord it ships with. Can the cord be shortened or extended?
- Clear height where people pass by: at least 2.10 m to the underside.
- Horizontal position above the centre of the table, not the room.
- The mount's own height — a canopy, hook or track can easily take 3-8 cm out of the space you budgeted for.
With those six figures in hand, the lamp can be ordered with the right cord the first time. Missing one of them, it's almost always the ceiling height at the outlet — and that takes thirty seconds to measure.
